Skills and Training Extended Placements (STEP)
Our STEP programme has been developed for those pupils who do not enjoy the academic curriculum or are in danger of becoming disaffected at their school. Bolton & Bury Education Business Partnership negotiates a reduced timetable with both the school and pupil and places the pupils with local companies to prepare them for working life. This helps them to gain practical, relevant skills that employers require, which in turn makes them instantly employable.
STEP is supported by a full-time Work Based Learning Coordinator who visits both the student and the company on a regular basis. A great deal of the companies already involved are using this programme as a feeder for their Modern Apprenticeship scheme.

Do you enjoy your Extended Placement and how have you changed?
“YES, I am definitely enjoying the programme. I have grown up quickly and feel more at home working with adults. I have also been offered a job and a Modern Apprenticeship by Gordons, I start at Wigan and Leigh College on a day release basis in September, where I will enhance the skills needed for me to become a qualified motor mechanic".
Would you recommend STEP to your friends?
“YES, especially if they are not enjoying school.” | If your organisation would like to learn more about the STEP programme call or email Linda Tonge on 01204 375790.
